The maternal great-grandfather of Rochelle and her sister Natalie was Simon [Szymon] Apfel, born about 1847, probably in Przemysl, a city in south-eastern Poland.
Simon’s son was Nathan Apfel. Nathan was born in 1871, probably in Przemysl. Nathan emigrated from Poland to Hull and then to London. He changed his name from Apfel to Apel. He became ill in London and was advised to go to Brighton to improve his health because of the invigorating sea air. Such advice was very common at that time. He became a watchmaker and restorer in Brighton, England, where he and his wife Rachel are buried.
